Where do hydrangeas grow best
Hydrangeas are among the most popular ornamental plants in German gardens – but not every variety thrives equally well in every location. The choice of location plays a crucial role in ensuring healthy growth, abundant blooms, and long-term enjoyment. We'll show you which hydrangea varieties prefer which location and how to optimally position potted plants.
Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla): Shade lovers with a high standard
Bigleaf hydrangeas—also known as garden hydrangeas—prefer a partially shaded to shady location protected from direct midday sun and strong winds. Ideal locations are under light trees that cast shade during the midday hours while still receiving some morning or evening sun.
💡 Tip from the gardener:
Hydrangeas are at risk of burning in full sun! The sensitive leaves are particularly susceptible to unsightly dry damage in hot summers.
For sunny spots: panicle and snowball hydrangeas
Those looking to add greenery to sunnier garden areas are best advised to choose more robust varieties such as the panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) or the snowball hydrangea 'Annabelle' . These species are significantly more heat-tolerant and develop their full blooms even in more sun.
However, especially in sunny locations, it is important to ensure sufficient soil moisture – ideally by watering in the morning and evening on hot days.
Space requirements: Hydrangeas need room to grow
Regardless of the variety, hydrangeas thrive when they have enough space . Shrubs planted too closely together tend to grow unevenly and become more susceptible to disease. So, plan for sufficient space at the sides and top when planting.
Hydrangeas in pots: terrace, balcony and proper wintering
Hydrangeas also thrive in tubs or pots – especially on balconies or terraces . Make sure they are kept in the same location conditions as in the garden: no direct sun at midday, but still sufficient light.
Potted hydrangeas should be repotted approximately every two years , ideally in early spring. Use slightly acidic, structurally stable soil and ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
🌿 Wintering tip:
Potted hydrangeas should overwinter in a frost-free but cool room —for example, a garage, an unheated conservatory, or a garden shed. There, the root ball is protected from frost without the plant sprouting prematurely.
Location alone is not enough: Care determines the abundance of flowers
A good location is essential—but truly profusely blooming hydrangeas also require proper care: adequate watering, appropriate fertilization (e.g., with our Ullmann Hydrangea Fertilizer ), and proper overwintering. Only the interplay of these factors ensures magnificent blooms for many years.
We wish you much success and a green thumb in choosing the perfect spot for your hydrangeas!
