Bigleaf hydrangeas—also known as garden hydrangeas—prefer a partially shaded to shady location protected from direct midday sun and strong winds. Ideal locations are under light trees that cast shade during the midday hours while still receiving some morning or evening sun.

For sunny spots: panicle and snowball hydrangeas
